About Us
Trans-Africa Projects was established as an independent company in July 1995 and
is owned by Fluor (the American Engineering Company) and Eskom (the state-owned
electricity supply company in South Africa). The business operates from three offices
in South Africa. Transmission studies, engineering and project management (from
220kV to 765kV) are all handled from the Midrand office near Johannesburg. Distribution
engineering (up to 132kV) are managed from the Durban, Cape Town and Midrand offices.
The company has a staff complement of about 250 in four main focus areas. These
are: Transmission Engineering, Transmission Project Management and Site Supervision,
Distribution Engineering and Research. Related specialist services such as full-scale
tower testing are also offered.
TAP has executed transmission projects in Namibia, Mozambique, Swaziland, Mauritius,
Botswana, Nigeria, South Africa, India, China and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. One of
the first projects was the reconstruction in 1995/6 of the 800km long 533kV DC lines
from Cahora Bassa (in Mozambique) to Pafuri at the South African border. Other projects
include the design and project management of the 900 km long, 400kV interconnection
between Windhoek (Namibia) and South Africa as well as the 400kV lines and substations
linking the Mozal Smelter in Maputo, Mozambique to the Eskom network. During the
2008/9 financial year, TAP generated sales in excess of USD 25 million.
TAP is one of the first Consulting Engineering Companies to obtain ISO 9001 and
ISO 14001 certifications simultaneously. This bears testimony to the high value
placed on client satisfaction.
